All Tomorrow’s parties and The Blackened Music Series will be bringing the first New York City performance of Sun O))) and Boris present Alter. ALTAR is a collaboration between Sunn 0))) and Boris that is a result of both bands conceptualizing, writing and recording together as one entity. There are elements of each group’s trademark sound but true to each group’s progressive and experimental aspects, ALTAR moves into a completely new dimension.
If that wasn’t enough, BXI, a collaboration between Boris and Ian Astbury will be direct support. It will be there first US performance. Look out for a record from them via Southern Lord in August. Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hearafter will open the show.
Tickets are on sale now on Ticket Web, click here.

Caught the legendary Dinosaur Jr. at the sort of new venue / bowling alley Brooklyn Bowl. Before the show my friend and I coincidently bowled a few games next to Lou Barlow and he was pretty damn good. He even wore his bowling shoes throughout the whole set (below). The band was loud and as usual J. Mascis made all the solos look easy. Unfortunately, I only snapped a few pics. You can check them out after the jump.

Toronto’s Fucked Up came to Brooklyn’s Masonic Temple to perform the future hardcore punk classic The Chemistry of Common Life in it’s entirety. The band brought some guests including hipster darlings Vivian Girls on backup vocals and world class pianist/party-rock king Andrew W.K to tickle the ivories (well plastic keys). Despite what sounded like partially blown speakers in the P.A. system, Fucked Up did not disappoint. Even the singer/guitarist of the opening act, Titus Andronicus, could be found crowd surfing and screaming along with Pink Eyes.
During the last song of the encore, Andrew WK returned to the stage which I assume most hoped would break into one of his many songs about partying, puking and/or New York City. Instead after a long intro the band broke into “Louie, Louie” which was a perfect ending to the night as the crowd filled the stage singing along.
More pictures after the jump.

The Blackened Music Series kicked off last week with the impressively blistering line-up of Brutal Truth, Repulsion and Pig Destroyer at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. The venue featured a few vendors selling metal cds and vinyl. The show also doubled as a release party for the new Decibel book which we are giving away a couple copies of. Despite feeling like a boiler room inside at times it was a great show and every band slayed. Click next for more photos.
Make sure to check out the next show in the Blackened Music Series featuring Sunn 0))) and Earth. Tickets are available here.

Jay Reatard came to Music Hall with a 25 minute headlining set where he turned all of his songs into 2 minute jabs of punk rock. Mr. Reatard does not play anything slow or similar to how it sounds on record, but that’s the charm of his live shows. After finishing his set opener TV Smith of The Adverts came out and performed 3 tracks with Jay and his band. Also of note is that at the shows Jay is selling his new LP Watch Me Fall not due out till August 4th. Click next to see some photos from the first set and the set with TV Smith.
