Mp3: Black Mountain – “Old Fangs” + “The Hair Song”

Posted by William on September 1st, 2010 | 1 Comment

Black Mountain will soon release their third full length Wilderness Heart which finds them tighter then ever and possibly topping their last effort In The Future. They are one of the few bands that pull off a heavy classic rock sound with strong influences from King Crimson, Sabbath and Janis Joplin while still sounding modern. Jagjauar has been kind enough to post two songs for download, but we all know this will sound better on wax, so go order that now.

Microsoft will be releasing a new X-box 360 wireless controller on Nov. 9th that has the new feature of a D-Pad that pops out as you twist it clockwise. Two possible uses of the new function according to Microsoft:

“Select the traditional plus for distinct cardinal direction movement in games like Halo: Reach to change weapons and perform complicated combinations and deadly finishing moves in Street Fighter games, or rotate the D-pad to the disc format for sweeping motions in games such as Pro Evolution Soccer 2011.”

The redesigned controller will only be available with the Play & Charge Kit. The bundle will set you back $64.99.

Louis C.K.’S “Hilarious” Coming To IFC Center

Posted by William on August 31st, 2010 | Leave A Comment

Louis C.K. (arguably one of the best stand-up comedians ever!) is bringing his stand-up film “Hilarious” that premiered at Sundance earlier this year for a limited theater run including 4 shows at the IFC Center in New York City on September 8th and 9th. New York lucks out because Louie will be there himself to present the film. If you can wait and have the dough for premium cable channels, the film will premiere on EPIX on September 18th and find its way to Comedy Central in 2011.

For more info and tickets visit the IFC Center website.

In other Louie news, FX has picked up his show “Louie” (which can be streamed on Hulu) for a second season and he will be touring the country this fall with all new material for his latest show ‘Word’. The tour includes a stop at Carnegie Hall for the NY Comedy Festival on Nov. 4th, find out ticket info here.

Video: Blunt Mechanic Live on KEXP

Blunt Mechanic is the latest project of Ben Barnett (Kind of Like Spitting) who in my opinion is a highly under appreciated songwriter and guitarist. The band recently did a live session for Seattle radio station KEXP. Check out Ben’s riffage in the video for “What Would Milo Do?” below and more videos over at KEXP’s youtube channel here. You can also find an mp3 download below the video for the track “Less Beat”.

Canon’s Newest DSLR – The 60D

Posted by William on August 26th, 2010 | Leave A Comment

Canon’s newest DSLR, the 60D is boasting some impressive new features, namely a vari-angle LCD screen which allow for shooting and different angles as well as taking HD video shooting to a new level for a DSLR. Another interesting feature is in-camera raw processing and creative filters. While the professional photograpers might be unimpressed, the creative filter addition are a nice bonus.

The filters included

  • The Soft Focus effect filter helps dramatize an image and smooth over shiny reflections.
  • The Grainy Black and White filter can give a different nostalgic perspective to any shot.
  • Canon’s “Toy Camera” filter deliberately adds vignetting and color shift for a creative option when shooting a colorful scene.
  • Users can also make a scene appear like a small-scale model, simulating the look from a tilt-shift lens, with Canon’s Miniature Effect filter, great when shooting any scene from a high vantage point.

Look for the camera to hit stores in the end of September, retailing at around $1099 or $1399 with an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. Watch a video testing out the camera after the jump and find out more info on Gizmodo and CNet.

Unreleased Comedy Album From The State Coming Sept. 14th

Posted by William on August 26th, 2010 | Leave A Comment

Apparently, The State recorded an album Comedy For Gracious Living that was never released. The album features 25 skits and you can pre-order and check out clips here(though the clips kept crashing my browser). While I am a huge fan of the show, I am a bit weary of skit albums as they are a thing of the past for a reason. The last skit based album I can remember coming out was Norm MacDonald’s Ridiculous, which was terrible. I definitely look forward to giving it a spin though as they will likely have some gems on there.

UK Lo-fi punks Male Bonding dive into an otherworldly underwater scene for the “Weird Feelings” video, a track off of their Sub Pop debut Nothing Hurts. The VHS quality and the green screen effects give the impression that they may have recorded this video at a karaoke place somewhere in a mall during the nineties. Check these guys out on tour this fall with Best Coast.

Tim Kasher of Cursive and The Good Life has decided to go solo this time around with The Game Of Monogamy. “Cold Love” is a more reminiscent of The Good Life with it’s more straight forward indie-pop approach and continues to show Kasher’s affection toward having a horn section which became heavily featured in his music on Cursive’s Happy Hollow. Stream below or enter your email address and Saddle Creek will kindly send you the mp3.
