New York’s ohnomoon have posted a gorgeous cover of David Bowie’s classic “Ashes To Ashes”. This is the last song the band recorded with bassist Raymond Blanco before his untimely passing two weeks ago. I was fortunate to meet Ray earlier this year through my friends in the band and he was someone you instantly felt a friendship with. He was clever, kind and a talented musician.
Look out for the band at The Deli’s CMJ Showcase on 10/18 at The Delancey and 11/19 at The Delancey again playing as special show in Ray’s honor.
Coliseum continues their path of creating more melodic music that still pummels your ears and this song is definitely on par then all the best tracks on House with a Curse. For the new EP Parasites, J. Robbins once again produced and Rick Froberg (Obits, Hot Snakes) provided the album art.
Yuck has been releasing lots of b-sides throughout the year and now they will all get a proper release with one of those deluxe reissue deals which I could criticize them for, but Yuck is possibly my favorite release of the year so I am 100% for it. Like everything else they have put out this year, this song rules.
Kurt Vile already released a fantastic full length LP this year and now he is set to release a new EP featuring 5 new tracks and a cover of Springsteen’s “Downbound Train”. These cuts were recorded during the Smoke Ring For My Halo sessions. Check out “The Creature” below and order this from Matador.
Surfer Blood performed “Miranda” when opening up for Guided By Voices at McCarren Park this summer and the recording is just as good as I remember it. This one is fast and sounds a bit Smoking Popes-esque. Look out for the new record on October 23rd.
Here’s a very haunting song from Bradford Cox’s Atlas Sound which also shows some roots in 70′s rock. This track is from his new proper LP (as he has released a ton of music this year for free) Parallax. Look out for it on November 8th.
“Lucky Now” is the first track to hit the internet off of Ryan Adams’ forthcoming album Ashes & Fire. Adams has experimented with different sounds over the years, including rock n roll and metal, but now he’s back to his alt-country roots, which is when he’s at his best. He’s teamed up with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ keyboardist Benmont Tench to create this beautifully paired down track.
Male Bonding‘s upgraded production on Endless Now seems to be doing wonders as the two tracks released thus far destroy all their previous recordings. Check out “Tame The Sun” below, a catchy track with just the right amount of noise blended in.
Download the ††† (Crosses) EP now! This EP is amazing dark shoegazy pop with electronic tinges done masterfully by Chino Moreno of Deftones and Shaun Lopez of Far. One of the best EPs I have heard so far this year.
One of Kill Rock Stars latest signings, Brooklyn’s Milagres write sonically beautiful indie rock in vein and on par with the likes of Grizzly Bear. Here is the title track from Glowing Mouth.

Female fronted California-based Sneak Peek are currently working on a seven song EP to be released this summer. Including former members of The Willowz, they fit in with recent girl garage bands like Colleen Green and Best Coast. They describe themselves as a lo-fi/garage/grunge/psych band, and I couldn’t have said it better. Take a listen to “Walk All Over Me” off of the forthcoming EP.
Originally self-releasing the album Apocalypse Surfin’, the Toronto-based band Revolvers received a record deal after Canada’s Now Magazine ranked it among their favorites of 2009. It was officially released last November. Check out the song “Break It Loose”. Revolvers’ sound is reminiscent of early/mid-sixties rock ‘n’ roll. At times it reminds me of The Kinks and at others Bob Dylan, with a little surf rock thrown in. There is a lot of garage-surf rock floating around these days, but this band stands out because of their psychedelic feel. I’ll definitely be adding this album to the rotation this summer.
“Black Tounge”, the first track to be released from The Hunter sounds decent, but usually Mastodon is about the full album experience so we will just sit back and anxiously await it’s release.
